Digital Collection of the Rostock City Archive
The origins of the Rostock Council Archive can be traced back to the year 1265. Dr. Karl Koppmann was the first historian and archivist to take over the management of the house in 1884, transforming it into a modern city archive.
The archive moved in 1907. After damage caused by bomb hits in 1942 (approx. 300 running metres of Niedergerichtsakten) and the subsequent removal of the holdings, archival work was continued in 1946. The administrative archive of the city of Rostock was subordinated to the city archive in 1969. Since 1976 the house has had its own photo and reproduction office. Since 1996, the archive has been under the control of the Senate Department for Schools, Culture and Sport as an independent office.
