The Archive of the Hanseatic City of Wismar can look back on a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages as the "memory of the city administration". Today it sees itself both as an institution for researching the city's history and as a service institution for the interests of citizens and the city administration.
Since moving into new and modern equipped premises in 1998, it offers its users significantly improved working conditions. In addition to the 920 sacred and secular documents, the archive stores around 2000 linear metres of files. The extensive collections, including drawings, plans, photographs, films and posters, as well as the Council and Museum Library with over 25,000 volumes and a comprehensive newspaper collection, supplement the tradition of the eventful history of the Hanseatic City of Wismar and the offices of Poel and Neukloster. Through its own exhibitions and the publication of the "Wismarer Beiträge" as a popular science series, the archive is actively involved in historical educational work.
